We’ve all done it. Scrolling and calling it research. It’s so easy to get sucked into the doom scroll. Instagram is designed that way! Before you know it it’s midnight and you can’t remember what you’ve even watched!

But the best way to do research on Instagram is to be more strategic:

Write down the name of 5 big competitors.

Take a look at their posts and look for the ones with great views and / or engagement.

Spend a few minutes analysing the post to work out why it did well. If it’s a Reel does it have a strong visual hook? What hook did they type onto the screen? How long was the Reel? Did it use trending audio?

If it was a carousel what hook did they use on the image? Written? Striking picture? Did they include music? Was it educational? Was it humorous?

This is your research. This is how you work out what your ideal follower engages with.

Obviously you’re not going to copy these Reels and posts! But you can use them for inspiration!

You can still scroll. It can still be fun to watch Reels on Insta!

But jet’s do that for fun from time to time. And when we’re researching let’s do it strategically.

You just need to leave some space on on screen for a good HOOK to hook people in and them watching!

Watch time is a big one for the algorithm. It signals that your Reel is worth pushing out to other people. Potential new followers!!

So go stand in front of your tree. Feeling nervous? Take your coffee (or your wine! 🍷) with you and just take a sip. You only need 6 or 7 seconds of footage for good B Roll.

Well the answer is yes! You just need to know how to ask it the right questions!

Take this prompt and type it into Chat GPT:

Act like an experienced social media marketer who specialises in Instagram growth.

I’d like you to give me 5 suggestions for Instagram posts that will reach new followers. I’d like the posts to highlight why X is relevant to Y.

[X is what you sell, product or service. Y is your ideal follower]

My ideal follower is [insert yours here. Be specific. Mums with toddlers who live in Kent. Small businesses owners who have fewer than 1000 followers. Etc].

And then here’s the most important bit of the prompt:

Do you have any questions for me before you create the post suggestions?

This is the bit that will allow even the free version of Chat GPT to tailor its response to you, your small business, and your ideal follower.
